What is worth pointing out

Corrections, above everything. A Metro line is cut back for track work, a museum changes how it releases its passes, a memorial path shuts for repairs, a tour changes its entrance. If you have just been and something here did not match, that is worth more than any amount of desk research.

Especially useful: anything about arriving and moving around, such as the Metro to the airports, the fare rules on trains and buses and the water taxi, and anything about timed entry, such as the Washington Monument, the Library of Congress, the museum passes and the White House tour requests, which are the parts of this guide most likely to go stale.

What this is not for

It is not a booking service. This site does not sell, book or reserve anything, and cannot get you a room, a table, a pass, a Capitol tour or a White House tour; those come from the sites themselves, their official booking systems or a member of Congress.

It cannot tell you what something costs or when it opens: no price or opening time appears anywhere on this site, because the operator is the only source that is right on the day. For non-emergency city questions in the District, call 311; for emergencies, call 911.

The neighborhoods

If a page describes a place, a street or a piece of the city's history in a way that is wrong or unfair, that matters here too, and it will be corrected. This guide does not label any neighborhood as good or bad, because such labels are rarely accurate and never useful.

Photographs

Every photograph on this site is credited beside it, and every credit links to the file's own page on Wikimedia Commons, where its author, its license and its history are recorded.

Photographs are replaced when a better or more recent one of the same place turns up, and captions are corrected when they describe the frame wrongly.
