Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to count visits and to see which pages are read. It records the page you are on, roughly where in the world you are, and what kind of device you are using.

It does not record your name, your address or anything you type, and the data is kept for fourteen months. If you would rather not be counted, any browser setting or extension that blocks analytics will stop it.

Affiliate links

Some links on the planning pages (getting here, where to stay, booking ahead and day trips) and on a few planning articles in the journal are affiliate links, provided through the Travelpayouts network. If you book something through one of them, this site may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you.

Those links are marked on the page, above the first link, and no sight page carries one. Nothing is recommended because it pays. Following such a link takes you to the partner's own site, which sets its own cookies and has its own privacy policy.

This site does not sell, book or reserve anything, handle payments or hold tickets or rooms. Any booking you make is a contract between you and the travel company, under its terms, and this site is not a party to it and carries no responsibility for it. Free passes for federal sites and museums come only from those sites and their official booking systems.

The Drive script

Every page also loads a script from Travelpayouts (tpembars.com), called Drive, which can add affiliate links, travel recommendations and previews to the page. It runs in your browser, and Travelpayouts and the travel services it links to may set their own cookies.

Following one of those links does not identify you to this site; the service you land on has its own privacy policy. A content blocker stops the script and every page still works.

Fonts and hosting

The typefaces are served by Google Fonts, which means your browser requests them from Google when a page loads.

The site itself is a set of static files served through Cloudflare. There are no accounts, no logins and no comment forms, so there is nothing to sign up to and nothing to delete.

Images and links

The photographs are served from this site's own server, not loaded from Wikimedia while you read. Links to other sites, such as museums, the Park Service and transit operators, take you to those sites, which have their own privacy policies.

Changes

If this site starts doing anything else with data, this page will say so before it happens.
